“It Does Screw with Your Mental State”

Abstract

Detachment Services Assistants (DSAs) are non-sworn public servants who perform a variety of administrative and support roles within detachments or specialized units of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Drawing from semi-structured interviews with 54 DSAs, we analyse how DSAs, because of their duties, experience a variety of operational and organizational stressors that can contribute to occupational stress injuries (OSIs). We further examine how operational and organizational stressors interact to produce or mitigate OSIs, particularly focusing on how DSAs’ feelings of being (un)supported at the detachment or organizational level may contribute to their mental health and well-being. We conclude by offering suggestions for how the development of OSIs can be minimized in DSA work and how the RCMP can better support DSAs when they experience OSIs.
