Occupation‐centred Practice

Abstract

Participation in school life is a critical element of childhood. Occupational therapists have considerable expertise to support children's school‐based occupational performance. This chapter outlines Universal Design for Learning and Differentiated Instruction as techniques that occupational therapists might use. It provides an overview of Partnering for Change (P4C) and the Occupational Therapy Intervention Process Model (OTIPM) as evidence‐based approaches to working with whole classes in schools and to support professional reasoning. The Classroom Intervention Reasoning Approach was based on the use of the OTIPM. The OTIPM is a professional reasoning model which guides occupational therapists to remain centred on occupation and deliver occupation‐based and occupation‐focused services. The P4C model aims to build the capacity of educators and parents to support children with special needs in all spaces and places. Providing occupational therapy services within school settings is a complex process with frequent challenges experienced by both health and educational professionals.
