Mental Health Emergencies in Athletes

Abstract

Athletes are revered in society and often conceptualized as being superhuman and infallible. Despite this image, the reality is that athletes at all levels can experience mental illness at similar (or higher) rates as the general population. Athletes are also not immune to mental health crises and emergencies; and sports can sometimes become triggering events for crises. While mental health professionals are well equipped to manage acute disturbances in mental health, the Integrated Support Team (IST) with whom the athlete spends most of their time is often not trained or prepared to manage such scenarios. This chapter will describe factors that may lead to mental health emergencies in athletes, outline the elements that define a crisis, and, through presentation of a real case, explore roles that the various members of the IST can have in supporting the athlete.
