When a student is struggling to succeed in their studies, there are often multiple contributing factors. It is crucial to take an individualised approach which identifies and addresses the underlying causes. Student success is important to the student, the teachers, the institution, and the community. There are many possible factors contributing to a student's struggles. When difficulties are serious and profound, interventions at multiple levels can bring seemingly challenging, or even insurmountable, problems down to a manageable size. Factors external to the student can contribute significantly and may also need addressing. When a medical student is having significant difficulty in the programme, there is usually more than one underlying factor. As in patient care, a thorough assessment is necessary. Medical students may struggle with absorbing and applying large amounts of information, have difficulty with effective time management, or have inadequate study strategies. To become a physician, good self-regulated learning is essential.
