Formation of Ice on Roads beneath Bridges

Abstract

Conditions for icing on roads beneath bridges under overcast skies are investigated with a surface energy balance model. The model accounts for sensible and latent heat exchange between the road and atmosphere conduction of heat into the road, and the bridge's effect on radiation. Model calculations show that this hazardous condition may persist for many hours.
