Common Psychiatric Disorders in the Renal Patient

Abstract

This chapter will examine psychiatric conditions in the patient with chronic kidney disease (CKD) including end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Approximately 10–15% of adults worldwide are affected by CKD. Those with kidney disease are faced with psychological stress related to the lifelong course of the illness and can encounter distress related to treatment decisions, complications and side effects from treatment, as well as treatment failure and disease progression. The condition can be debilitating and is associated with elevated rates of psychiatric comorbidity. This chapter will review the intersection among CKD/ESRD and depressive, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, trauma, and stressor-related disorders; bipolar and related disorders; schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders; and common sleep-wake disorders. Neurocognitive ramifications of renal disease (delirium and major neurocognitive disorder) will be covered elsewhere in this volume.
