Physical Activity and Nutrition in Chronic Kidney Disease
Abstract
This chapter examines the impact of physical activity and nutrition in the prevention, progression, and management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in adults. Evidence for health benefits of physical activity and nutrition are presented, along with clinical practice recommendations. The particular importance of cardiovascular risk reduction in the context of CKD is highlighted. Key concepts related to specific dietary modifications for people living with CKD are reviewed, including protein, potassium, phosphate, and sodium. Strategies for prescribing physical activity are introduced, as are resources for patients and clinicians to guide lifestyle management of CKD. Adults make lifestyle and healthcare choices based on personal values, priorities, and available resources which can influence the course of CKD and its complications, as well as overall health and wellness. The importance of a patient-centered approach to optimize uptake of physical activity and dietary strategies is emphasized, along with motivational interviewing tips. The chapter promotes the role of the physician as advocate for adequate and accessible resources to support healthy lifestyle choices for all.
