Chapter

Cognitive behavioral group therapy.

Abstract

This chapter reviews the structure and content of cognitive behavioral group therapy (CBGT), CBGT therapeutic strategies, and how these strategies should be adapted from an individual to a group setting. It discusses the special characteristics of CBGT, including group process factors as well as the unique challenges of conducting CBGT, including working with a cotherapist, managing group dynamics, and ethical considerations. The chapter discusses the importance of assessing treatment progress and outcomes, including general measures of symptom severity, impairment, and quality of life, as well as group-specific variables such as group cohesion. It reviews mechanisms of change related to CBGT outcome, including the theoretical foundation, structure, and group process factors. Finally, the chapter highlights the importance of dissemination and training in conducting group therapy as well as adapting CBGT to diverse populations and settings.
