Optimal forest fire control with limited reinforcements

Abstract

Abstract A forest fire fighting model is generalized to include the possibility of dispatching reinforcements whose size may be limited for the particular fire. The resulting deterministic optimal control problem with free final time and a moving boundary equality constraint on the final state and with bounded state and control variables is solved by the maximum principle. The optimal control is found to be a bang‐bang control which can switch at most twice until the final time.
