Nutrition and burn injury – manuscript

Abstract

The stress response from burn injury induces a profound and persistent increase in metabolic demands that induce catabolism. Adequate and early nutrition is paramount for recovery as nutritional substrates provide the necessary energy and protein to fulfill essential processes like wound healing, organ function, and immune response. Altered hormonal and metabolic pathways make carbohydrate and protein the preferred fuel sources, as they create an environment that promotes anabolism. Supplementation of vitamins and trace elements help to modulate the immune and inflammatory response and promote faster wound healing with decreased infectious complications.
