Three complementary systems for coding the process...
Chapter

Three complementary systems for coding the process of therapeutic dialogue.

Abstract

Describes 3 complementary systems (Psychological Space Coding System, Negotiation of Therapy Agenda, and Strategies of Telling and Talking) for analyzing the therapeutic process. They share a central principle that successful therapeutic process is attributable to the transformation of meaning that takes place in the psychotherapeutic interaction. Clients and therapists work conjointly at reformulating statements about self and other, and in doing so they reveal identifiable strategies. The process of transformation is traceable to changes in client and therapist statements. The three systems provide complementary analyses of critical dimensions for understanding interpersonal engagement between clients and therapists, and therapeutic progress. They aim to render detailed and multilevel moment-to-moment accounts of interactions by tracing the formulations and reformulations of group members as they engage with one another and with the therapists. Each of the systems is applied to both client and therapist statements. They assess group patterns as a whole, interactional patterns among group members, and therapist and individual group members' contributions.
