Defining the Fault Lines: New Divisions in the Working Class

Abstract

In case we needed further reminder, increased workers insecurity brings with it no automatic collective response. Using the case of Australian and Canadian autoworkers, the author traces how the tendencies towards social division amongst workers are re-articulated through the introduction of new managerial strategies, particularly lean production and Human Resource Management. But it also emphasises that these tendencies can be countered by a trade union strategy which stresses the importance of an agenda which recognises the importance of women and the potential for alliances with other groups.
