Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) Patient-reported outcome measures are becoming increasingly important in surgerySurgery as there has been an emphasis on patient-centered care and evaluationEvaluation of outcomesOutcomes reported by patients themselves. To critically analyze studies describing patient-reported outcomes (PROs)Patient-reported outcomes and ultimately, to improve care of patients, it is paramount for providers to understand terminology and concepts related to the development and evaluation of PROMs. In this article, we present a clinical scenario, define terminology, outline the development process, and summarize ways to evaluate different PROMs. Together, we hope that this will serve as a guideGuide for surgeons and other healthcare providers on how to select a PROM and to demonstrate how studies using PROs can be applied to answering important clinical questionsClinical question in surgery.
