Crystal growth and magnetic anisotropy of YTiO3

Abstract

Single crystals of YTiO3 were grown from the melt by the Czochralski technique from molybdenum crucibles under purified argon. YTiO3 melts congruently at about 1965 ± 30°C. The largest crystals were a few mm on a side. Measurements of the magnetic moment of oriented single crystals at 4.2K reveal that the b- and c-axes are easy axes of magnetization while the a-axis is hard.
