Prof. Dorter on justice and method in the Statesman

Abstract

In his paper "Justice and method in the Statesman", Prof. Dorter argues that Plato uses the method of division in a non-bisectional way that he knws to be dubious and that he abandons the method half-way through because it is a value-free method that cannot capture the concept of due measure. However, the method of division is not in itself committed to bisection, and its applicability to subjects of different value allows it to recognize that evaluative notions must sometimes be included within definitions.
