Dynamic FE analysis of the carbon fibre-winding pressure vessel with aluminum alloy liners

Abstract

To study the destruction mechanism of carbon fiber winding pressure vessel, analyze dynamic bursting condition of carbon fiber winding pressure vessel, predict bursting pressure of the vessel and evaluate its safety and reliability, the carbon fiber winding pressure vessel was analyzed for its dynamic bursting pressure, the research achievements of mechanical properties about composite laminated plates and ANSYS/LS-DYNA finite element method of simulating were introduced to dynamic analysis of bursting pressure about the vessels. Under the condition of linear uniform load, a curtain 2-litter vessel was calculated. Bursting occurs at pressure of 69.8 MPa 3.87 s after loading in Chang-chang model of first layer failure; Bursting occurs at pressure of 77.1 MPa 3.95 s after loading in Chang-chang model of all layer failure; Bursting occurs at pressure of 78.04 MPa 3.902 s after loading in Tsai-wu model of stiffness degradation. The error between the simulating values of failure pressure and the testing value of 80.6 MPa is acceptable, and the bursting pressure in Tsai-wu model of stiffness degradation is the closest to the testing value with error of 3.18%, so the Tsai-wu model is the most suitable for the condition. Destruction of the vessel step by step when bursting was simulated using ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The bursting pressure of numerical simulation is relatively conservative, and there will be more safety stock, so the method is suitable for engineering application.
