Population Aging

Abstract

Continued declines in fertility and mortality have meant a shift toward an older age structure, characterized by a smaller share of children and a larger share of older adults (ages 65 and greater). Given low fertility rates and increasing life expectancies, it is expected that population aging will accelerate in the coming years. This entry provides an overview of population aging, including discussion of how aging is characterized as well as the concerns associated with aging populations.
