On the Proton T2 Effects of Oxygen-17 as an NMR and MRI Label for Water in Living Systems

Abstract

The water proton T2 in living organism can be greatly reduced by the administration of oxygen-17 enriched water. This effect can be used to follow diffusion in model systems and is used here to monitor the altered circulation in the brain resulting from the ligation of one of the carotid arteries in living gerbils.
