Syphilitic Uveitis

Abstract

Syphilis is a highly contagious sexually transmitted disease caused by the spirochete bacterium Treponema pallidum. Syphilis is known as the great imitator since it can mimic virtually any intraocular inflammatory disease. Therefore, syphilis evaluation should be warranted in any case of uveitis that needs investigation. Ocular involvement may be the presenting manifestation of syphilis which may cause delay in the diagnosis and treatment resulting in profound visual loss.
