Introduction to the Crystal Chemistry of Transition Metal Oxides

Abstract An attempt is made to introduce the subject of the structure of the vast class of materials known as transition metal oxides (TMO). Transition metals are defined as members of the d and f groups in the periodic table. After the introduction of a core of principles, which determine the crystal structure of TMO, six of the most important structure types and structures derived from these are presented: NaCl or rock salt‐, corundum‐, rutile‐, fluorite‐, perovskite‐, and spinel structures. Many examples are described with the use of 50 figures, 11 tables, and 186 references. Connections between structure and properties, both physical and chemical, are discussed.
