Developing ethnically sensitive and appropriate dementia care practice

Abstract

In this chapter, I focus on ethnically sensitive practice. ‘Ethnicity’ is a socially constructed term, the relationship between ethnicity and dementia being a neglected area of research, both generally and particularly in the UK. We are now beginning to appreciate that services that are ethnically sensitive may not be ethnically appropriate. Moreover, racism is a disagreeable feature of service provision and must be addressed at the interpersonal, organizational and institutional levels.
