Hong Kong: demographic and epidemiological change and social care for elderly people

Abstract

Considers whether Hong Kong society has become less caring towards elderly people as a result of modernisation and concludes that a number of social, political and economic factors are operating to reduce the opportunities for caring for elderly relatives at home. Next, outlines the provision of support services, residential services, and private homes for the elderly. The private sector has become a growth-area in Hong Kong, largely for the upper and middle classes, but standards are sometimes poor. The author concludes that no attempt has been made to judge likely future needs, particularly for residential and special medical care. -M.Amos
