Structural phase transition in the spinel MgA12O4

Abstract

A new crystallographic phase transformation in MgAl2O4 is reported in which the low-temperature low-symmetry space group of MgAl2O4 transforms to the 'spinel' space group Fd3m at ~ 450 °C. The in situ electron diffraction experiments suggest that this is a second-order phase transformation.
