Chapter
An Introduction to Calculations in Surgery
Abstract
The purpose of these lectures is to survey some of the methods available for determining surgery obstructions for surgery problems with finite fundamental groups. These methods are mostly algebraic but the algebra is motivated by geometry, so to begin we will describe the geometrical setting for surgery. The sources used in each lecture are given at the end, and the reader should refer to them for proofs and references to the original work.
