The Gut Microbiome: Potential Innovations for the Understanding and Treatment of Psychopathology

The past decade has seen an increase in research examining the potential role of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in psychopathology. The microbiota-gut-brain axis involves bidirectional communication between the gut and the central nervous system. Although it is well-established that the central nervous system plays a role in the functioning of the gut, there is growing evidence that the gut also has an influence on the central nervous system. Studies using animal models have suggested that the microbiota-gut-brain axis may play a role in modulating the brain and behavior. The present article provides an overview of the preclinical evidence for the role of the microbiota-gut-brain axis in psychopathology and discusses the potential clinical implications for how we understand and treat psychiatric disorders. Moreover, future directions for research are identified. La dernière décennie a connu une augmentation au niveau des travaux de recherche qui examinent le rôle potentiel de l’axe microbiote intestinal-cerveau en psychopathologie. L’axe microbiote intestinal-cerveau implique une communication bidirectionnelle entre l’intestin et le système nerveux central. Bien qu’il est bien établi que le système nerveux central joue un rôle dans le fonctionnement de l’intestin, il y a de plus en plus de preuves que l’intestin a également une influence sur le système nerveux central. Des études sur modèles animaux ont suggéré que l’axe microbiote-intestin-cerveau jouerait un rôle en modulant le cerveau et le comportement.
