Access and social complexity: Identifying and managing access requirements across social groups and across the world

The emergence of cities is conventionally explained as a consequence of the localization of resources and the gregarious nature of human beings. Implicit in this explanation are the advantages accrued by proximity, including the reduction in the cost of transportation and the concomitant increase in the general levels of accessibility to opportunities, resources, and people.
