Processing of Ferrous Alloys

Abstract

Ferrous products remain one of the most relevant and most widely used industrial products in the modern world. Steel processing is a dynamic and active area of development. It is estimated that as many as half of the steel grades used in a modern car did not exist 20 years ago. The development of new steel chemistries and processing routes continues to accelerate as engineers work to design products that would improve the consumer experience, reduce environmental impact, and improve safety. All aspects of steel processing are evolving, starting from steelmaking to thermomechanical processing and coatings. This chapter aims to highlight and summarize some of the new frontiers in the processing of ferrous alloys and related products. The aim is to present a high-level picture that would set the stage for more detailed discussion in subsequent chapters.
