How to Avoid Complications in Hip Arthroscopy

Complications in hip arthroscopy are relatively rare, particularly major complications. Reported complications are breakage of instruments, cartilage and labral injuries, instability, nerve injuries, femoral neck fractures, infections, heterotopic ossification (HO), and thromboembolic events. Proper surgical technique with safe access to the joint, the use of image intensifier and a shortest possible tractions time are important factors to reduce the complication risk. The use of prophylactic antibiotics, DVT prophylaxis and HO prophylaxis (NSAIDS) should be considered. Patients must be well informed about possible complications and the expected outcome.
