60. Later developmental emergence of deficits following pediatric frontal lobe injury: A case study

Abstract

This case study illustrates the delayed consequences of early frontal lobe injury, sustained at age 7 years. It describes the slow onset of difficulties with judgment, impulsivity, cognitive-communication issues, high-level attention, organization and planning, and the impact of these deficits upon academic performance, family dynamics, and peer interactions. These deficits were fully realized by the age of 12 years and occurred despite intact intellectual functioning. This study emphasizes the need for a cohesive team approach to education and rehabilitation, long-term monitoring, and accessibility to late intervention. It also demonstrates the reality that intact intellectual capacity following frontal lobe injury does not necessarily protect against devastating functional consequences. © 2001 Academic Press.
