Concurrent and Construct Validity of the Erhardt Developmental Prehension Assessment and the Peabody Developmental Fine Motor Scale

&NA; Concurrent and construct validities of the Erhardt Developmental Prehension Assessment (EDPA) and the Peabody Developmental Fine Motor Scale (PDFMS) were examined by administering each test to 32 healthy full-term infants under 12 months of age. Operationally defined age equivalent scores for the right and left hands on the EDPA were compared to the normed age equivalent scores on the PDFMS. Mean EDPA scores for both the right and left hands were significantly higher than the mean PDFMS score (p < .01). Correlations between scores on the two tests were .95 (EDPA right hand) and .94 (EDPA left hand). Correlations between chronological age and EDPA age equivalent scores were .95 for both the right and left hands. The correlation results provide evidence of construct validity of the EDPA as a measure of fine motor development, however, the differences in mean age equivalent scores for the two tests do not support concurrent validity of the EDPA with the PDFMS. Further standardization of EDPA administration and scoring procedures is recommended to improve reliability and validity.
