Review of Research on Reliability and Validity of the Movement Assessment of Infants

Abstract

&NA; The Movement Assessment of Infants (MAI) was developed by Chandler, Andrews, and Swanson for use in early identification of infants with neuromotor dysfunction, referral for early intervention, and to monitor the effects of physical therapy. The format, content, and qualitative rating scale are appealing to physical therapists and, consequently, the MAI was published in 1980 despite incomplete test construction. The purpose of this article is to critique the MAI and then review subsequent research on reliability and validity. The Chandler Movement Assessment of Infants-Screening Test which evolved from research on the MAI is also described. The information presented should assist the physical therapist in interpretation of MAI results and clinical decision-making.
