Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS)
Abstract
Intestinal obstruction resulting from compression of the third part of the duodenum between the superior mesenteric artery and posterior structures is well described in childhood and early to mid adult life but not in older people. This paper describes two cases occurring in advanced age and reviews the clinical features, treatment options and radiological investigation. The disorder can occur in late life and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal tract obstruction. © 2007 Rila Publications Ltd.
