Introduction to Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Abstract

Ultrasound is an effective and established technique in musculoskeletal imaging; its role in diagnostic imaging is continuing to expand with the development of further clinical applications and with the advancement of ultrasound technology. It is well established in Europe as a first line imaging modality in the investigation of musculoskeletal pathology and is rapidly gaining popularity in North America, as shown by the popularity of musculoskeletal ultrasound teaching courses. Ultrasound is, however, operator dependent and requires a detailed knowledge of the relevant anatomy, ultrasound artifacts, technique, and ultrasound appearance of both normal and abnormal structures for the conduction and interpretation of the study.
