Movement Control and Down'S Syndrome: A Neuropsychological Approach

Abstract

Publisher This chapter argues that although control processes–structural difference distinction that is useful to researchers attempting to understand how mentally retarded people learn and organize movements, both the developmental and difference approach to mental retardation are problematic; the former approach because it ignores individual differences and the latter approach because it ignores developmental similarities. The chapter focuses on research conducted over the last several years with Down's Syndrome persons in which neuropsychological models of cerebral organization attempts to understand some of the general and specific perceptual-motor problems experienced by these people.
