Cardium Formation 6. Stratigraphic framework of the Cardium in subsurface.

Abstract

We propose a formal stratigraphic terminology for the Cardium (Turonian, Upper Cretaceous) in the subsurface of Alberta. The new names constitute a framework for future sedimentological work, and emphasize unconformity-bounded packages, and intertonguing and erosional relationships, rather than a 'layer cake'. geometry. This stratigraphy defines 2 distinctly different types of rock body. The 1st consists of progressively upward-coarsening stratigraphic sequences terminated by regional erosion surfaces. The 2nd consists of the deposits that immediately overlie the erosion surfaces.- from Authors
