A persistent spirit: towards understanding Aboriginal health in British Columbia

Abstract

This volume attempts to raise awareness of Aboriginal (first nation) health issues in British Columbia, and to point the way toward increasing understanding and response to issues of Aboriginal health by means of knowing and doing. The sections cover culture contact; demography and health; native health statistics; a geography of Aboriginal health; changing traditional diet and nutrition; resistance knowledge and therapy for those having experienced violence, Aboriginal suicide rates; midwifery; an epidemiology of cancer incidence; diabetes; issues in health management; a study of the Tsewultun health centre, focusing on the Cowichan peoples, and an autobiographical account of an Aboriginal individual's experience of nervous breakdown and subsequent therapy and recovery. -after Editors
