Balanced Polymorphism

Abstract

Genetic variation is often maintained by the balance of multiple evolutionary forces. An important example in humans is the persistence of the sickle-cell allele in many populations that have previously experienced or presently experience malaria. In this case, different alleles are maintained in equilibrium due to the relatively higher fitness of heterozygotes.
