Citrobacter and Enterobacter are gram-negative bacteria in the family Enterobacteriaceae that are found in water, soil, and as commensals within the human gastrointestinal tract. While these organisms have historically received little attention because of their low threat to humans, they are now emerging as pathogens, especially for immunocompromised patients within the hospital setting.
