Particle Emission from Metal Surfaces Irradiated with MeV Protons

Abstract

Particle emission yields from cold-rolled and annealed Fe, Nb, and Au surfaces under MeV proton bombardment are reported. 16-MeV protons are used to simulate the surface sputtering by 14-MeV neutrons which is of interest for nuclear fusion. Sputtering yields of less than 2 × 10-4 are reported. "Chunk emission" is not observed.
