The 40Ar(n, γ)41Ar reaction

Abstract

The gamma radiation emitted following neutron capture in natural argon has been studied. A neutron separation energy of 6098±2 keV was found for 41Ar. From energy, intensity and coincidence measurements, a decay scheme was constructed which included all of the 25 observed transitions. Comparison of the (n, γ) reduced widths with the (d, p) spectroscopic factor S = (2Jf+1)θ2 for eight ln = 1 levels indicated that the quantity γθ2 is highly correlated (ϱ = +0.97). A much lower correlation (ϱ = +0.42) is obtained for the quantity γ/(2Jf+1)θ2 which is expected to represent the relation between the two reaction mechanisms.
