Finite element analysis of polymeric liquid flows.

Abstract

A general purpose finite element program was developed and used for simulation of flow of polymer solutions and melts through process equipment. Detailed calculations were performed for calendering and for entry and exit flows through two dimensional dies. Calculations with the CEF viscoelastic model failed to converge at a certain value of Deborah number (De). To extend the De range and better describe the behaviour of real polymer solutions and melts, a simplified constitutive model that is valid for simple shear and includes experimental viscosity and normal stress data is used.
