A wave directional spectra program for wave gage arrays

Abstract

This paper describes a series of computer programs that can be used to calculate wave directional spectra from a wave gage array, under different environmental conditions. The Maximum Likelihood Method (MLM), the iterative MLM, the convolutive MLM and the pitch-roll-heave and cloverleaf buoy equivalent techniques are used for evaluation of wave directional spectra. Higher directional moments of the water surface elevation of mixed seas based on the above techniques are evaluated. The DIRectional SPECtra program (DIRSPEC) runs interactively and is demonstrated by applying it to field data obtained from a symmetrical six wave gage array at the National Water Research Institute's [NWRI] Waves Tower on Lake Ontario.
