Dipole dipole interactions and Davydov splitting in crystals

The dipole dipole interaction theory of Davydov for factor group (Davydov) splitting in the vibrations of molecular groups in crystals is discussed. It is shown that, even in a particularly simple case, dipole dipole interactions alone are insufficient to explain the observed effects.
