A comparison of the Raman spectra of anhydrite (CaSO4) and gypsum (CaSO4).2H2O)

Abstract

The Raman spectrum of anhydrite is analysed and its relation to the spectrum of gypsum discussed. Comparison is also made with some spectra recorded from samples of deuterated gypsum. A fairly strong coupling is shown to exist between external modes of vibration of the water molecules and internal modes of vibration of the sulphate ions.
