DEEP-WATER SANDSTONE FACIES AND ANCIENT SUBMARINE FANS: MODELS FOR EXPLORATION FOR STRATIGRAPHIC TRAPS.

Abstract

The various sandstone and conglomerates that geologists recognize as deep-water deposits are reviewed. The entire suite of rocks belongs to the ″resedimented coarse-clastic family,″ but excludes oceanic mudstones, oozes, and related fine-grained deposits. The various members of the family are related to depositional environments known in modern submarine fans. Finally, it is suggested how the submarine fan model may be used in petroleum exploration.
