Lack of Correlation between Amniotic Fluid Progesterone and Fetal Sex Near Term

Abstract

Human amniotic fluid obtained near term was examined for total progesterone, progesterone binding and total protein. Samples from patients bearing male (M) fetuses had 25.5 ± 2.0 ng/ml (n = 45) and female (F) fetuses 23.8 ± 2.7 ng/ml (n = 32). Bound progesterone in undiluted fluid was 47.1 ± 2.2% (M) and 48.5 ± 2.1% (F) while total protein was 2.1 ± 0.2 mg/ml (M) and 2.3 ± 0.3 mg/ml (F). No sex differences could be found.
