Influence of cerium on the texture and ductility of magnesium extrusions
Abstract
This paper describes a significant increase in elongation in Mg due to the addition of only 0.2% Ce. This effect is explained as due to the Ce addition altering the texture of the extruded rods during recrystallization by orienting the c-axis of the grains at an angle that favors basal slip activity. A concomitant reduction in grain size and yield strength and an increase in work hardening rate are also observed as a result of the Ce addition.
