abstract

  • The likelihood of accidents and the response mechanisms devoted to the preservation of human life in the event of such disasters is a crucial problem associated with any public means of transportation. By visualizing the Canadian Corridor train schedule using a raster-based geographic information system (GIS) and assuming that the probability of train-with-train collisions is a function of intersection density, sections of space and time can be classified according to the likelihood of such disasters. This information can be of value to emergency planners who must determine the optimal locations, in both space and time, for their scarce resources.
