An experimental search for corrective terms of force between moving charged particles

Abstract

In this paper, possible corrections to the electromagnetic force between charged particles which depend on particle acceleration are investigated. An experimental approach to determine if such corrections exist is proposed and results of measurements of the mechanical force between two current loops driven at frequencies of up to 200 MHz are presented. No frequency dependence of the mechanical force was found, indicating that for our experimental conditions the electromagnetic force is acceleration independent. However, with proper design of current loops and displacement sensing instrumentation, the experimental method described in this paper should be applicable to frequencies perhaps as high as 50 GHz. That would increase the sensitivity of the proposed force measurement for up to five orders of magnitude.
