Storage of negative keV ions in a heavy-ion storage ring

Abstract

The storage times of selected atomic and molecular negative ions have been investigated at an energy of 100 keV. Collisional- detachment processes with residual gas atoms restrict beam lifetimes to ∼ 1–5 s. The perspectives for negative-ion research are briefly discussed.
